What is an identity check (KYC), and how long does it take?
Short answer
An identity check (KYC, short for "know your customer") is how exchanges confirm who you are, as anti-money-laundering rules require: you enter your details, photograph your ID and do a face scan. Without it, much of the exchange stays locked. OKX usually reviews it within 24 hours, Binance within 48.
- Only submit your ID on the official website or app. Never send photos of it to anyone claiming to be support.
- Use your own ID only, and never lend yours to anyone.

The exchange checks that the account really belongs to you, as anti-money-laundering rules require.
An example
After signing up to Binance, open the app and tap [Account Center] → [Unverified], or [Verify Now] on the home screen. Then follow the prompts:
- Enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID. You can’t change them after you confirm.
- Photograph your ID, then do the face scan: no hat or glasses, no filters, good lighting, eyes open and your whole face centred.
- Don’t refresh the page or close the app until you’re done.
The result usually comes within 48 hours.

FAQ
How long does the identity check take?
OKX usually within 24 hours, Binance usually within 48 hours. Some take longer.
What if my identity check fails?
Go back to where you started and try again. OKX tells you why on the verification page or by email; Binance has tips to check before you retry. Our two pages on failed identity checks have each exchange's steps.
Can I verify with someone else's ID?
No. Your account has to be verified with your own ID. OKX also says one identity can only verify one account, so don't lend yours to anyone.
